Bio-Based Materials

Materials enabled by industrial biotechnology and bio-based fuels are emerging as strategically critical businesses for the chemicals industry.  Single-cell bacterial organisms are the basis of industrial biotechnology. Targeted Growth is combining its capabilities in genetic engineering with a microbial-based production system to rapidly develop new applications for generating biofuel feedstock.

Bio-Based Materials & Renewable Energy

  • Creation of renewable "2nd generation" fuels
  • Enables production of bio-based materials in lieu of using petrochemical sources (fibers, hard plastics, industrial chemicals, solvents, etc.)
  • Reduced competition between feedstock and food supply

Production

Unlike other biofuel crops, industrial biotech materials have the potential to be harvested on a constant, year-round basis. Additionally, they can often be produced in environments normally unsuitable for traditional agriculture, offering local sourcing of renewable fuels in diverse geographies and leaving more farmland available for dedicated food production.

Attributes

  • Increased production over traditional feedstock sources in both scale and harvest window
  • Diverse applications
  • Diverse geographies
  • High potential for cost reduction throughout the product cycle: production, processing, transportation, use of by-products

Targeted Growth Bio-Based Materials

Traditionally, bio-based materials have been produced in two steps:

  1. Terrestrial plants utilize photosynthesis to produce sugars
  2. Plant-based sugars are transported to a fermentation facility microbes convert sugars into valuable bio-based materials

Targeted Growth combines both steps, photosynthesis and industrial fermentation,by utilizing microbes with highly efficient photosynthetic capabilities and improved control over key metabolic pathways.
